If you are a visa-exempt national, you will need an AVE to travel to Canada. The good news is that if you are going there for an internship or a study programme, an AVE will be provided when you send in your study/work permit.. So you won't have to spend a lot of money on this. That's why we don't include this reason for travel in our form.

What is the procedure for studying in Canada? You can apply for a study permit if you just want to study, without doing an internship or working. All you need to do is be registered at a Canadian educational establishment.

How do I apply for an internship/work placement in Canada? You can apply to International Experience Canada before you leave. This document is issued by the Government of Canada to students enrolled in university or higher education who wish to do an internship in Canada as part of their studies. Two types of permit are available: a closed internship permit, which allows you to work for just one employer, or an open internship permit (Working Holiday Permit), which allows you to work for several employers. Whether the work placement is paid or unpaid, you need a permit to work in Canada.

Applications for study/work or work experience permits can be made on the official Canadian government website.

If the duration of your work placement/study exceeds 180 days, you will be offered a visa tailored to your stay. Most students need to provide their biometric data when applying for a study permit, by going to an approved centre near them, depending on their nationality and place of residence.
