What types of passport are authorised for the AVE Canada?

To travel to Canada as a tourist, the AVE is popular for its simplicity and flexibility".

Authorised passports

Ordinary/regular passport
A passport issued to citizens for occasional travel, including holidays and business trips.

Diplomatic passport
A passport issued to citizens who are senior civil servants, diplomats or representatives or delegates of a government.

Official and service passport
A passport normally issued to citizens, such as non-diplomatic government officials, who are travelling on official government business.
In theory, there is no charge for these passports.

Emergency/provisional travel document
A travel document or passport issued to citizens in an emergency, when it is not possible to issue a temporary passport. These documents are often only valid for a short period of time.

Please note that some documents allow you to travel without paying consular fees (e.g. service passports).

Travel documents refused

Refugee travel document
A travel document issued to non-citizens with protected person status, including Convention refugees and persons in need of protection.

Passport for foreign nationals/travel document issued to non-citizens
A passport or travel document issued to non-citizens who reside permanently or temporarily in the country that issued the document, but who are not citizens of that country.

Permit to re-enter the United States (I-327)
A travel document issued by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services to permanent residents in good standing of the United States allowing them to travel abroad and re-enter the United States without having to obtain a permanent resident re-entry visa.

Travel document for refugees from the United States (I-571)
A travel document issued by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services to non-citizens who have been granted refugee status or asylum. If you hold an I 571 document, you are only eligible to apply for an EVA if you are a legal permanent resident of the United States.

Identity card
The identity card alone, particularly for European countries, is not recognised as a valid identity document.
