The AVE is different from the Canada visa. A visa is a physical authorisation, such as a seal or sticker on a passport, that allows you to enter another country. Usually, you need to apply for a visa at the embassy in advance or obtain a visa at the border. For both processes, you must complete the paperwork and obtain approval from the immigration officer. Canada requires citizens of many countries to obtain a visa before entering the country.

The AVE Canada is simpler. If Canada does not require citizens of your country to have a visa to enter, then they are likely to need an AVE. US citizens are an exception as they only need a passport to pass.

Compared with visas, Canadian ETA applications are easier and quicker. The ETA is electronic, not physical. Once your application has been approved, it will be automatically linked to your passport..

The most common visas in Canada are single-use or multiple-use. Most travellers with a multiple-use visa can stay in Canada from six months to ten years or until their passport expires. The EVV is valid for five years. However, if you obtain a new passport, you need a new EVA because it is associated with your passport number.
